Elechek Show at the Festival of Folk Arts<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>Asel Kalkanova<\/strong>, ethno designer and founder of Atalar Izi: Traditional Kyrgyz Costumes Studio, is coming from Kyrgyzstan to introduce the culture of elechek to visitors.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The elechek<\/strong> is the traditional headdress of Kyrgyz women, consisting of a cap and an exceptionally long white textile strip. This cloth is wrapped turban-style around the head and then decorated with embroidery, ribbons, and jewelry. Wearing the elechek is an integral part of the traditional Kyrgyz wedding ceremony. As a kind of initiation ritual, the bride\u2019s first elechek is tied at her family\u2019s home before she sets off to meet her groom. During the ceremony, elders offer blessings, expressing the community\u2019s good wishes for the new bride and her family \u2014 often focusing on good health, fertility, and family harmony.<\/p>\n

Married women may also wear elecheks at important events, adapting the styles to suit the occasion. Different communities have developed their own styles and rituals, and these variations often reflect the wearer\u2019s age, social status, and family situation.<\/p>\n

The knowledge related to the elechek headwear is traditionally passed down from mother to daughter during elechek-tying ceremonies, from older women to younger generations. However, in recent years, new forms of transmission have also emerged: women strive to preserve and pass on this cultural heritage through workshops, online video courses, and collaborations with researchers.<\/p>\n

The elechek is not only a unique headdress but also an important element of shared cultural identity, strengthening bonds between generations, fostering community cohesion, and reinforcing women’s roles.<\/p>\n

The tradition of the elechek was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023.<\/p>\n
